Instagram introduces the “Repost” feature – a new era of content sharing or another copy of the competition?

Instagram has officially introduced the long-awaited repost feature – a way to publicly share a favourite post or Reel directly to your own profile, without using external tools or screenshots. With this option, users can share content they like much more easily and quickly.

How does it actually work?

  • To repost content, tap the “repost” icon on a public post or Reel. You can also add a comment through the bubble that appears.
  • Reposted content can also appear in your followers’ feeds, and you get a dedicated “Reposts” tab on your profile where it can be viewed later.
  • The original creator always receives credit – meaning their content can gain greater reach, even among users who do not follow them.

Why is this new feature generating reactions?

  • Community reactions: users have welcomed the move as a logical and much-needed addition that Instagram has lacked for years.
  • Copying without originality?: some critics see it as Instagram’s version of the “retweet” from Twitter/X and another response to features popularised by TikTok and Snapchat – without a distinctive creative signature of its own.

What does this mean for creators and brands?

  1. Greater organic reach – your content can spread through the networks of followers who choose to repost it.
  2. Visibility without additional spend – reposting offers a new and effective way to gain exposure without increasing your advertising budget.
  3. Benefits for reposters, but concerns for original creators: the growing focus on sharing may increase content noise and make it harder for original content to stand out.

What else arrived with the same update?

  • Instagram Map – you can optionally share your real-time location and discover location-based posts shared by friends.
  • Friends Tab in Reels – a place where you can see videos your friends have liked, commented on or reposted, with privacy options and more limited sharing.

The key challenge: finding the right balance

  • Do not overload your profile with other people’s posts. If you want to maintain a strong creator identity, combine original content with carefully selected reposts.
  • Stay authentic. Repost only content that genuinely aligns with your values, voice and brand.
  • Support original creators. Repost content from creators you value – it is a win-win: they gain additional reach, while you gain relevant and engaging content that you are able to share.

Instagram’s repost feature is an evolution that increases the potential for organic sharing and engagement, but it also requires a thoughtful strategy and the element that truly makes the difference – a balanced content mix. Those who understand how to use it effectively will be the ones who benefit most.
